Zhao Gang’s practice engages with painting as a conceptual and expressive medium, often combining figuration with abstraction to explore themes of identity, history, and cultural representation. His works frequently draw on both Eastern and Western visual traditions, resulting in compositions that challenge fixed narratives and stylistic boundaries.
In Meritorious Man (2014), a solitary figure is depicted in a frontal, almost iconic pose, set against a vividly patterned background of vertical bands and shifting colour fields. The contrast between the simplified, stylised figure and the dynamic backdrop creates a tension between stillness and movement, while the use of bold colour and flattened forms lends the composition a symbolic, almost ceremonial quality. Through this interplay, Zhao constructs a portrait that reflects on authority, identity, and the constructed nature of representation.
