Zhao Gang
Biography
Born in Beijing in 1961, multi-disciplinary artist Zhao Gang emerged in the late 1970s as part of the avant-garde Stars Group, whose members—including Ai Weiwei—staged protests of the Chinese Communist Party’s suppression of artistic expression. Gang later spent time studying Europe and the United States, making work that spanned painting, photography, and performance art.
Gang’s work reflects on cultural and social transformations in China, exploring themes such as identity, history, globalization, and the clash between tradition and modernity. His artworks have been showcased in numerous exhibitions around the world, including at Performa Biennial, the Yokohama Triennial, the Guggenheim Museum.
