Odinakachi Okoroafor is a mixed-media artist living and working in Enugu State, Nigeria, whose practice has attracted growing critical attention for its technical originality and conceptual depth. Working in screen printing, acrylic, and image transfer, he constructs compositions in which the human figure is simultaneously revealed and obscured by densely interlocking fields of line; barcode-like formations and lace-derived structures drawn from the textile traditions of southeastern Nigeria, where intricate needlework has long served as cultural expression.
Okoroafor’s style meditates on the reduction of human beings to units of economic exchange, while the delicacy of his patterning insists on the beauty and complexity of the figures it brings into being, an art of quietly devastating dual consciousness. See Through IV belongs to one of the artist’s most sustained and critically regarded series.
