Joy Labinjo

Profile

Biography

Joy Labinjo’s friends and family take center stage in her colorful, large-scale paintings of domestic scenes. The artist typically uses digital collage to combine elements taken from family photo albums, catalogs, social media, and her own imagination. She places the fractured, complex results against solid hues or simple patterns. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Labinjo studied at the University of Newcastle before beginning her MFA at the Ruskin School of Art at University of Oxford in 2020. She has enjoyed solo exhibitions in London, Athens, and Newcastle, and her work has been acquired by the U.K.’s Government Art Collection, the Musée d’Art Contemporain Africain Al Maaden in Morocco, and the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art in Nigeria. Drawing on her own multicultural upbringing in the 1990s and early 2000s, Labinjo explores questions of race, culture, identity, family, and community.
