Romane De Watteville’s practice centres on figurative painting, often focusing on fragments of the body and everyday objects to explore themes of intimacy, absence, and contemporary life. Her compositions are characterised by clean lines, saturated colour, and a carefully controlled sense of space, creating scenes that feel both immediate and subtly detached.
In After Party (2021), the cropped view of a reclining figure’s legs, paired with a sparsely set table, evokes the quiet aftermath of a social moment. The interplay of bold colour fields and simplified forms heightens the sense of stillness, while the absence of the full figure invites the viewer to reconstruct the narrative. Through this selective framing, De Watteville captures a fleeting, transitional moment, where presence is suggested through what remains rather than what is fully shown.
