This proposed exhibition deals with two contemporary Iranian artists’ very different interpretation of memory and the past. One from an artist who grew up in Iran and now visits regularly (Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar) and who draws inspiration from these visits; and the other who left aged four and has not returned since (Firouz FarmanFarmaian) and who explores the meaning of his exile and identity through his projections.
Both are justifiably extremely proud of their nation and its people. In their work, each tackles what it means to be Iranian in today’s society, from a regional and international perspective; how their heritage informs the present and the continuing role which nostalgia plays in building the country’s future.
The following images are samples of the each artist’s practice only and are not a definitive selection of works proposed for the show.
